Common Core for Higher Ed

Next month the National Math and Science teacher training team will be heading to Tennessee to work with college of education faculty on imbedding common core into teacher preparation.  This is a first as far as we know and a great collaboration between the Tennessee HIgher Education Commission (THEC), Lipscomb University and NMSI. Tennessee has been incredible in their work to prepare for common core implementation and we are very excited to be a part of it. We are also working with a district to train their curriculum directors ...

Common Core - shining the harsh light

First Kentucky and now Georgia.  States are starting to provide data on assessments that are more closely aligned to common core state standards and the results indicate that we might finally stop lying to students and be truthful about where they are on college readiness.  For years we have told students they are proficient when in reality we just kept lowering the cut score to be proficient.  Kentucky gave their version of the test and less than half are proficient and now edweek reports the same thing happened on math ...

Teaching Careers - find the right position

I had a great call with Alicia Herald from myEDmatch about her site and what they are going to accomplish in teaching. NMSI is busy replicating the UTeach program that recruits math and science majors to become teachers.  One of the things we wanted to do was to make sure that those teachers went to the schools that best suited their needs and myEDmatch can really help our teachers find the right school.  She sent me the below on her site:  "myEDmatch is a new matchmaking employment website that brings together ...

NMSI Expands

Welcome! This is a pretty exciting time at the National Math and Science Initiative. Just 18 months ago, NMSI was 17 people working hard with a program in 8 states.  Today NMSI is the combined strength of Laying the Foundation, AP Strategies, AP Teacher Training and Incentive Program, UTeach and the Initiative for Military Families.  Each of the programs had an acronym and each the 6 different programs became confusing.  So the website you see today is really who we are. We are one organization focused on transforming education in ...
